EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

AARP Driving Class
Date(s): Tuesday & Wednesday, March 19, 20; April 9, 10, 23, 24; May 14, 15; June 4, 5, 18, 19, 2019
Location: Senior Station
Time: 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Target Age: Adults age 50 and older
Description: Pre-registration is required. Students will learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws and rules of the road and much more. Plus upon completion you could save money on your car insurance!
Registration will be held at the Senior Station. AARP members fee $15, and non-members $20. Instructor, Eddie Carr.

Lunch & Learn
Date: 2nd Mondays
Time: 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Ages: Adults age 55 & older
Description: A variety of topics that are health, financial, community and wellness related. So staying informed is the vest way to stay healthy. We are partnering with Humana to provide information and resources during our lunch and learn. Come out and hear the latest information on these topics. Registration is required. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Enhance Fitness
Date: Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday
Time: 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: The program helps adults at all fitness levels become more active, energized and empowered to live independently. Each session will end with a cool down. Sessions will meet three times a week. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. You must have a City of Portsmouth facility ID. Instructor Caitlyn Allen, Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia. 

Fitness Room
Date: Open Monday – Friday
Time: 9 a.m. – Noon and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Age: Adults 55 and older
Description: Come work out in our fitness room. Our equipment will help keep you fit. You must be a registered participant. Proper athletic footwear and gym wear required. Participant must have a valid facility I.D. card.

Community Resource Center

Day: Tuesdays
Time: 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Ages: Adults 55 and older
Description: Portsmouth Health Department and Portsmouth Parks & Recreation introduce: The Community Resource Center. Community Health Workers are available to consult and provide information on local resources for the senior population. The volunteers are there to complete necessary intake paperwork with clients and to address their needs concerning topics from chronic disease to housing assistance! Our biggest priority is closing the gap to care, and linking our Portsmouth residents with the information they need to live long, healthy lives! If there are any questions, or if you are interested in learning about the Community Health Worker program, please feel free to give us a call at 391-3241.

COMPUTER LAB

Open Computer Lab
Days: Monday – Friday
Times: 9 a.m. – Noon & 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Ages: Adults 55 & older
Description: Open computer lab is for registered participants. You must sign in and out. Participant must have a valid facility I.D. card.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Senior Fall Bowling League

Date: January 17 – March 21, 2019
Time: Noon
Location: Strike Zone Scott Center Annex, 1487 Andrews St, Portsmouth, VA 23704
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: Senior bowling for fun and fitness! Awards will be given at the end of the league. Includes 3 games of bowling, shoes and lunch. You must register by Friday, October 5, 2018. A valid facility ID is required. Cost: $12 per person payable at bowling center.

 

St. Patty’s Day Celebration

Date: Friday, March 15, 2019
Time: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: Today we celebrate St. Patrick and some Ireish traditions. Come and enjoy some Irish Stew, sing some songs and learn the history of the famou St. Patrick. Your registration and donation is due by Monday, March 11, 2019Cost: $7 donation.

Senior Sports Day Registration

Date: March 1 – April 1, 2019
Time: Facility Hours/9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Location: Application will be available at the Senior Station, 3rd Floor Portsmouth City Hall Parks & Recreaion Office, Portsmouth Recreation Centers and Public Libraries.
Target Age: Adults age 50 and older
Description: The Annual Senior Sports Day will take place May 6-9, 2019. Please pick up your application for more detailed information.

Good Friday Breakfast 

Date: Friday, April 19, 2019
Time: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: Join us at our annual Good Friday Breakfast as we celebrate the ending of Passion Week in songs, poems and a heartwarming breakfast. Registration and donation of $7 is due by Monday, April 15, 2019.

Description: Join us as we celebrate our senior volunteers. Mother’s Day Celebration

Description: Join us as we celebrate our senior mothers for their strength, love of family and community and the great influecne they have on our generation. Registration and donation of $7 is due by Friday, May 10, 2019.

Memorial Day Program
Date: Friday, May 31, 2019
Time: 10:30 a.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: Join us as we remember our loved ones. A beautiful candle lighting ceremony will take place. If you have someone you would like to be a part of this day, please call (757) 391-3241 to be placed in the program by Monday, May 27, 2019. 

A Day for Fathers
Date: Friday, June 14, 2019
Time: 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: Calling all senior fathers! This is your day! It’s game day! A day of contests, tournaments, fellowship and lunch. Awards will be given. Your donation of $7 and registration is due by Monday, June 10, 2019.

Annual Fish Fry
Date: Friday, June 21, 2019
Time: 11 a.m. – 2:30 a.m.

Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: Fun, Food and Fish… This annual event is so much fun! Come out and enjoy games entertainment and lots of food! Please make your reservation and donation of $10 per person by Monday, June 17, 2019.

 TRIPS AND TOURS

The Ark Encounter & Creation Museum

Date: April 8 – 13, 2019
Time: Leaving at 8 a.m. Parking location TBA
Location: Senior Station
Target Age: 50 years and older
Description: The Ark Encounter & Creation Museum is located in Cincinnati. We will leave Portsmouth by way of motor coach, enjoy 5 nights of lodging, 8 meals, 5 breakfasts and 3 dinners, admission to the Ark Museum, the Creation Museum and the Newport Aquarium and much more. The Ark is a life-size Noah’s Ark built on the dimensions given in the bible. the Creation Museum allows you to venture through biblical history and the aquarium has 70 exhibits, 14 galleries, five seamless tunnels totaling 200 feet in length. You will experience penguins, gators, sharks and much more! Stop by the Senior Station for more information. Rocky Hock Playhouse; Edenton N.C., – It is Finished
Date: Tuesday, April 16, 2019
Time: Leaving at 8:30 a.m. – Returning by 5 pm.
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: In the words of the writer, “Meet Jesus’ friends and enemies: people he both lived and died for.” This is a powerful story. it is a musical reenactment of Jesus’ life, death, burial and resurrection. Our trip includes dinner. A deposit of $20 is due upon registration with the balance of $33 due by Friday, April 5, 2019. 

Virginia Aquarium and Science Museum, Virginia Beach
Date: Tuesday, May 21, 2019
Time: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: Explore over 800,000 gallons at one of the best aquariums and animal habitats in the country. Come and experience hands -on exhibits and much more. Bring your walking shoes and energy for a fun filled experience. Admission to aquarium is $18 per person. If motor coach transportation is needed, additional fee will apply.
