EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

AARP Driving Class
Date(s): Tuesday & Wednesday, August 7 & 8, 21 & 22; September 4 & 5, 18 & 19; October 2 & 3, 16 & 17; November 6 & 7; December 4 & 5
Location: Senior Station
Time: 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Target Age: Adults aged 50 and older
Description: Pre-registration is required. Students will learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws and rules of the road and much more. Plus upon completion you could save money on your car insurance!
Registration will be held at the Senior Station. AARP members fee $15, and non-members $20. Instructor, Eddie Carr.

Lunch & Learn
Date: 2nd Mondays
Time: 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Ages: Adults 55 & older
Description: A variety of topics that are health, financial community and wellness related. So staying informed is the vest way to stay healthy. One of our goals is to keep you informed. Come out and hear the latest information on these topics. Registration is required. Please call (757) 391-3241

HEALTH, WELLNESS AND FITNESS

Enhance Fitness
Date: August – December
Time: 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Target Age: Adults 55 and older
Description: This program consists of light stretching, flexibility, increased blood flow and building strength. Each session will end with a cool down. Sessions meet three times a week. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. You must have a City of Portsmouth facility ID. Instructor Tara Turner

Fitness Room
Date: Open Monday – Friday
Time: 9 a.m. – Noon and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Age: Adults 55 and older
Description: Come work out in our fitness room. Our equipment will help keep you fit. You must be a registered participant. Proper athletic footwear and gym wear required. Participant must have a valid facility I.D. card.

 Senior Station Bowling League
Day: October 18 – December 13, 2018
Time: Noon 
Target Age: Adults 55 and older
Location: Strike Zone Bowling Center, Scott Center Annex
Description: Love to Bowl? Need to join a group? Come join us, and bring a group! Our newest social and physical activity. You must register at the Senior Station, have a valid military or state ID by May 26 in order to get on base. We will have a welcome and put our teams together on April 5. As they say “Good Luck” and “Good Bowling!”

Community Resource Center

Day: Tuesday
Time: 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Ages: Adults 55 and older

Description: Portsmouth Health Department and Portsmouth Parks & Recreation introduce: The Community Resource Center. Community Health Workers are available every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. to consult and provide information on local resources for the Senior population. The volunteers are there to complete necessary intake paperwork with clients and to address their needs concerning topics from chronic disease to housing assistance! Our biggest priority is closing the gap to care, and linking our Portsmouth residents with the information they need to live long, healthy lives! Description: Open computer lab is for registered participants. You must sign in and out. Participant must have a valid facility I.D. card.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Senior Summer Closing at the Park

Date: Friday, August 24, 2018
Time: 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Location: Portsmouth City Park
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: Education is the key to being informed. On this day, a presentation will be given on top topics of health and wellness, nutrition, personal care, fitness along with some fun. Health screenings along with Continental Breakfast and Lunch will be provided. Registration fee $5 per person. Please register by Friday, August 31, 2018.

Senior Summer Info Day/A Guide to Healthy Living

Date: Saturday, September 8, 2018
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Location: Senior Station
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: What a way to end our summer fun, than with an outdoor fun filled day in the sun. Good food and great games. We will recognize our program participants with awards along with door prizes. Registration and donation of $10 per person is due by August 21, 2018.

Breast Cancer Awareness Week

Date: October 15 – 19, 2018
Time: 10:30 a.m.

Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: We will have guest speakers to inform us of the disease its causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.  

Senior Fall Bowling League

Date: October 18 – December 1319, 2018
Time: Noon
Location: Strike Zone Scott Center Annex, 1487 Andrews St, Portsmouth, VA 23704
Target Age: Adults age 55 and older
Description: Senior bowling for fun and fitness! Awards will be given at the end of the league. Includes 3 games of bowling, shoes and lunch. You must register by Friday, October 5, 2018. A valid facility ID is required. Cost: $12 per person payable at bowling center.

National Crime Prevention Day

Description: Celebrating National Crime Prevention Day by focusing on educating the senior community on the important issues of safety awareness.

Fall Festival

Description: It’s carnival time! Come have fun with carnival games, and treats. Sign up for our bake off and fall flower arrangement contest.  Lots of fun for everyone.  Donation is due by Friday, October 26, 2018Cost: $6 donation.

The Art of Healthy Aging/ Sponsored by Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia, presented by Optima Health, Sentara

Description: This event includes a breakout session, exhibition hall, and health screenings and features the music of the Masters of Soul, presenting music of the Supremes, The Four Tops and the Temptations, Mistress of Ceremonies, Barbara Ciara of WTKR News 3. Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon, A Day of Thanksgiving

Family Caregivers Recognition

Description: We want to recognize your caregiver, please stop by and pick up a form to submit your care giver for our first time recognition program. They do wonderful things for you, so let’s give them some well-deserved awards. All submissions must be turned in by Friday, November 9, 2018.

Description: Call make an appointment to have your jewelry appraised, watches repaired and if you have old precious jewelry it could be sold as well. Please call to set up an appointment to repair or to evaluate your jewelry. 

Holiday Karaoke, Cookies & Cocoa

Kwanza Celebration

Description: Christ the Savior is Born…..A musical that will take you back to a time when life was perhaps not as simple as we sometimes imagine. Revisit a time and place when Mary and Joseph experienced powerful emotions as Jesus Christ was born. Motorcoach transportation provided. Cost:$ 45 donation for tickets, transportation and lunch.

Holiday Shopping – Tanger Outlet Mall, Mebane, N.C.
